Back to School Beauty from Middle School to College

Back to School isn’t just about clothes and notebooks, it’s also a time to take care and invest in the something just as important as your noggin… your skin.

For the Middle-School to College Student, the routine remains the same and I’ve broken it down into 2 main categories:  Basic & Accessories – simple essentials to add-on’s to enhance the complexion and protect and nurture skin.

Cleanse, Exfoliate and Moisturize are the 3 essentials when it comes to skin care.  Most girls are concerned with acne, but in reality – a gentle, non-drying cleanser will keep acne at bay.  Cleansing the skin of daily dirt, oil, bacteria and makeup are key.

Exfoliation is a girl’s best friend. It keep pores clean and clear while moisturizer should be lightweight and basic.  No fragrances or mineral oils to clog and irritate skin.

A SPF should be applied daily beginning at an early age.  Skin Cancer in on the rise and the sun contributes to over 90% of our pre-mature aging.  Have her start young, she’ll thank you!

Lip Balm helps to keep lips comfortable and hydrated.  Protection from air-conditioned or heated classroom (or just too much talking between classes) is easily remedied with a great lip balm (night) or gloss (day).

The accessories are just as simple for every day classes, but give experience to the older teen on color application.  A simple eyeshadow for a wash of color can be beautiful if applied properly.  Although I am not a fan of eyeliner for young girls, high-school may be a time to introduce it.  Always chose a medium to dark brown – NO BLACK – and apply it as close to the lashes as possible to the top only.  No need for water-lining or an all over approach.  The idea is to enhance natural beauty not add years to the age of our girls.

Back to cleansing and skin maintenance, a once-a-week deep cleansing mask unclogs pores, while a great medicine cabinet necessity is a acne spot treatment.  Apply at night before bed on clean skin and that blemish is gone!!

Of course, real beauty is all about confidence, happiness and a adventurous spirit.  Take the time to inspire a young girl and let her know the world is hers for the exploring!!!  It all starts with the belief that she can!

A Mother’s Love

, , ,

As a mother to three beautiful, blonde-hair, blue-eyed ladies AND super proud bonus-mom to three more (two daughters and a son), I personally take this role the most serious one in my life. Afterall, I am responsible for raising strong, confident, successful humans.

Many people who truly know me would say that my heart is my biggest asset.  But giving love isn’t enough.  Raising the expectations to be more, to do more, to dream and act more…I strive for this daily.

daughter quote

The world has changed so much since I was a child.  We worry now about the economy, competition for the best jobs, health, the environment and overall happiness.  I want most for my children is CONFIDENCE.  Confidence that there are capable of anything they want to achieve, to be, to do, to dream.  And although my natural instinct is to protect and nurture my children, I have realized that what they need to see is fight, tenacity, leadership.  To know that their mom is always in their corner with love and a hug, but as a pillar of strength and determination.

Self confidence for young girls is directly linked to their self-image.  Inside – but also on the outside. My daughters are all “tweens” and they all love beauty (well…maybe only two).  So despite my attempts to keep them out of my makeup drawer, there are a few products they can start to use early on that will have them (and you) smiling and creating self-love the beauty way:

Shower & Shampoo:  Hair does not have to be washed daily as this can induce flaking of the scalp, itching and removal of the natural oils. There is no harm in bathing every day, but it is more sensible to wash the hair every other day, using a frequent use shampoo.  Choose one without Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.  SLS is a “moderate hazard” that has been linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, organ toxicity, skin irritation and endocrine disruption. No need for that with so many better alternatives!

Fluoride Free Toothpaste:A recent study found that two out of every five adolescents in the U.S. have dental fluorosis, meaning too much fluoride. Not to mention, there are many other side effects linked to fluoride that are being published today!  Keep it safe with a fluoride free option.

Never too early to start washing your face:  Start with something calm and simple. Wash off the days dirt and oil with a gentle cleanser.

Deodorant:  Puberty in girls can begin as early as 8 years old.  Keep them as pure as can be by choosing a natural deodorant.
